I am a retired Army Field Artillery officer with 27 years of experience operating in a range of austere environments around the world, to include deploying in support of recovery efforts for Hurricane Katrina. Training for extended periods in the field taught me the importance of knowing the difference between what you NEED versus what you WANT.
You can't pack for every scenario, so prioritize items you can use in a range of situations, and don't forget your needs will change with the seasons.
While supporting the aftermath of Katrina, the following three things were eye-opening and became the foundation for my disaster preparation philosophy:
- The amount of damage Mother Nature can do over a large regional area is hard to imagine until you have seen it.
- How poorly prepared people were, even when they had plenty of warning.
- How quickly FEMA became overwhelmed when responding to such a large regional event.
When my wife and I moved to Seattle, we didn’t realize we were moving to a city with an earthquake, volcano, and tsunami threat. I built my first get home bags for us to keep at work so we could get home to where we had more supplies and our dogs. These bags later led to the start of this business as I discovered how confusing, time-consuming, and expensive it was to research and build a quality disaster preparation bag..
I started this business because I saw a great opportunity to help people protect themselves and their families by providing simple, cost-effective, and time-saving solutions.
It is no longer IF a disaster will impact you, but WHEN it will happen. However, you will have the piece of mind knowing you have the equipment, supplies, and resources you may need.
